In a major coup, North Queensland is set to host a festival of football, with more than 3,000 people expected to descend on Mackay from July 8 through to 14 for the inaugural Football Queensland (FQ) Community Cup.
The FQ Community Cup will be hosted at Mackay Football Park with zones from around the state going through an identification process to select their representative teams.
The competition will provide an opportunity for the next generation of talent to compete in a state competition.
Football Queensland General Manager of Football Operations Brendon Boss said 80 teams will participate from across the state with over 1280 players expected.
“The FQ Community Cup will provide our National Premier Leagues (NPL) selectors with an avenue to identify developing players for NPL programs, as well as provide coach and referee education,” Mr Boss said.
“We anticipate in excess of 3,000 players, staff and spectators to travel to Mackay for the week-long event.
“We have received significant support from the Queensland Government and Mackay Regional Council.
“Our zones have been hugely supportive of the initiative and are excited at the prospect of a state-wide competition.”
The FQ Community Cup has been established due to the absence of junior elite competition in Far North Queensland, North West, North Queensland, Wide Bay and Central Queensland.
“Our regional areas produce top quality players and this tournament could identify the next Frank Farina, Mitch Langerak or Josh Brillante.”
Mr Boss said the competition will benefit all those involved, including the community of Mackay.
“Mackay is the perfect place to host this event, with the range of sporting infrastructure and top facilities available for players, as well as proximity to first class accommodation and leisure,” he said.
“The economic opportunity of such an event is a huge positive to any region and we could not be happier to bring this to Mackay.”

We are inviting ALL players from Toowoomba Clubs into trials for the Toowoomba Rep teams. We are conducting trials ourselves this year at one centralized location and this brings all players together to be selected into equal teams.
This includes all players from Pittsworth, Oakey, Withcott, Gatton and Laidley as well. Players in Toowoomba will be invited to trial on Sundays 18th and 25th February to be selected into the Tmba Rep Teams.
The number of teams formed will be dependent upon the number of players that attend in each age group. We are hoping for three teams in U12, U13, U14 & U15/16 and a team each for U13G & U15 Girls.
Teams will be selected to play in the Zone Championships, where players can then be selected into the Zone Rep Teams. We are still seeking Coaches to coach the Toowoomba Rep teams, and your commitment will only be for two days 18th & 25th March.
Ideally, We would like Toowoomba Rep Coaches to be different to Zone Rep Coaches, as this would allow the Zone Rep Coaches to concentrate on their selections at the Zone Championships. If you have any queries, please contact Janelle on 0427 624261.

Referees in Queensland will have another tool to combat dissent in 2018, with the introduction of temporary dismissals (‘sin bins’) in Queensland competitions.
Any player cautioned for dissent will be punished with a yellow card (as per existing Laws), and will also be required to leave the field for a period of:
• Ten (10) minutes, for matches greater than 60 minutes’ duration; or
• Five (5) minutes, for matches of 60 minutes or less in duration.
The player can return to the field after the ‘sin bin’, but a second yellow card will result in the player being sent off.
This change is part of the International Football Association Board’s (IFAB) ‘Play Fair’ initiative, which aims to make football fairer and more enjoyable, while promoting players and officials as positive role models for society.
The concept has previously been trialled in UEFA U16 tournaments, and is currently being implemented across 32 grassroots leagues in England.
The ‘sin bin’ will be in place for all senior and junior community league competitions in Queensland next season.
This rule will not apply in National Premier Leagues Queensland or the Football Queensland Premier League.
